Artist Statement

My figurative classical sculpture in stone and bronze from intimate to monumental all convey a unifying message which celebrates our human experience.

B.M. McMullen (Am, b. 1967) is a classically-trained artist whose work can be found worldwide, including the Florence Nightingale Museum and Trust, the American Association of Architects, the US Embassy of the Ivory Coast, the Witt Family Memorial in the National Cathedral, Washington DC and for the State of Maine’s Houlton Courthouse as well as in many private collections. Mark recently chose to settle in South Portland, Maine after living in Costa Rica and Minneapolis.

McMullen developed his art career in a distinctly European sculptural tradition. His training and artistic development has followed the classic medieval pattern.

While working in several monument shops and stone quarries around the country, McMullen apprenticed under veteran Italian and French stone carvers. First fashioning decorative elements in stone from the architect’s drawings then graduating to the more highly skilled task of chiseling specific reliefs and ornamental motifs, eventually mastering portraiture, in the Giotto tradition, in bringing the human form alive.
